Izakaya Minato

From Judy Gibson to Boda to Scales and the Luna landscape, Izakaya Minato and  last and very the least the  sandwich shop Cera,  mostly remarkable and a few blemishes.

Luna at the new Canopy Hotel  is a winner. It’s everything a sophisticated, sleek urban outpost should be.  Interesting bar food and drinks, it’s essentially all about the view and the uber chic interior with its outdoor terrace overlooking the best of downtown Portland by the sea.  It makes you wonder  whether  we’ll ever have residential high rises with views like this from walls of glass overlooking our glorious waterfront?  The spate of new condo buildings in Portland  is architecture at its worst.  What is this trend of multi-faced edifices? (Brick meets siding?)  Hobson’s Landing is the worst offender.  Who’s paying nearly$1 million for these apartments with terraces that look like tenement fire escapes?  The Canopy building a few blocks over, however, is beautifully done, with its chic lobby and concierge entry to the Luna rooftop.

No need to induce “alternative facts” to paint the real scene of the newly opened Izakaya Minato, a surefire example of a Japanese gastropub.  So, if you’re looking for the next big thing in Portland dining then take yourself to  54 Washington Ave. where this newcomer opened earlier this week.  It’s next door to the Tex-Mex grandee, Terlingua,  and across the street from the strip’s highly regarded darling, Drifter’s Wife.  It also sits opposite from the former Roustabout, which closed last month. Word has it that none other than the indefatigable Rooms honcho Harding Lee Smith will fill the space.  It’s unclear what culinary route he’ll take, but so far no names have drifted across the transom.  Do I hear The Washington Room?

Masa Miyake tried the izakaya concept—the Japanese version of a gastro pub—formerly at his tiny aerie on Spring Street, which is now the Home Catering take out and sandwich shop. It closed shop a few years ago.   But Portland newcomer, Chef Thomas Takashi Cooke, and his wife, Elaine Alden, are exploring similar opportunities here to open his restaurant, Izakaya Minato.  On Tuesday evening, he held a pop up at Bao Bao showing off his  menu.

He hails from San Francisco where he was head chef of that city’s highly regarded Tsunami.  He and his wife Elaine moved to Portland recently.
